The transition to biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient agriculture requires not only changes in farming practices, but also appropriate finance. BioFinCas explores how credit, insurance, guarantees and other risk-sharing mechanisms can help producers and their organizations invest in the transition and manage the risks involved.
Understanding the links between biodiversity, climate risks and agricultural finance is becoming increasingly important, but also increasingly complex. Financial institutions, investors and insurers often need to navigate multiple risks, actors and possible solutions at once.
This page offers a clear starting point, highlighting key finance and risk-management approaches we work with in BioFinCas for the transition towards biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient agriculture.
Financing the Transition
Transforming agriculture towards biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient production requires more than changes in farming practices. Producers and their organizations also need access to appropriate financing to invest in the transition and manage the associated risks.
BioFinCas explores how finance can enable and accelerate this transformation. Rather than developing a single financial product, the project works with producer organizations, financial institutions, companies and other actors to identify, co-design and test financing and risk-management solutions that respond to specific needs and contexts.
Exploring Finance and Risk Solutions
BioFinCas explores different forms of agricultural and biodiversity finance solutions, including:
- Credit – financing investments in more resilient production
- Insurance – managing climate and production risks
- Guarantees – reducing barriers to accessing finance
- Risk-sharing mechanisms – distributing risks and costs among actors
The aim is to understand which financial solutions are appropriate for different contexts and how they can help make biodiversity-friendly production systems more economically viable and resilient.
The aim is not simply to develop financial products, but to generate evidence on what financing is needed, how risks and costs can be shared, and under which conditions solutions can be replicated and scaled.
Putting Solutions into Practice
For example, in Mexico, BioFinCas has tested parametric insurance to reduce climate-related production risks for coffee producers. Other contexts may require different combinations of financial instruments and incentives.
Creating the Conditions for Change
By connecting finance and risk management with the transition towards biodiversity-friendly agriculture, BioFinCas contributes to creating the financial conditions needed to scale these approaches and to translate the ambitions of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into practical action.
What does it take to finance the transition?
- What types of finance are needed?
- How can risks and costs be shared?
- Which solutions work in which contexts?
- Under what conditions can they be replicated and scaled?
