The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework sets global goals to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. BioFinCas contributes to these goals by promoting biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient agriculture and innovative finance solutions in Guatemala, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Global biodiversity commitments set ambitious goals, but translating them into concrete measures for agriculture, finance and value chains can be challenging. Governments, policymakers and agricultural organizations need to navigate complex targets while identifying practical approaches that fit their specific contexts.

This page provides a concise overview of how BioFinCas connects global biodiversity goals with action on the ground.

How BioFinCas contributes to the Global Biodiversity Framework

BioFinCas contributes to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) by working at the intersection of biodiversity, agriculture and finance in Guatemala, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The project focuses on coffee, cocoa and banana production systems, promoting biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient practices while addressing one of the key barriers to their adoption: access to appropriate finance.

From Global Targets to Local Action

In particular, BioFinCas contributes to:

  • GBF Target 10 – Enhance Biodiversity and Sustainability in Agriculture, Aquaculture, Fisheries, and Forestry: supporting the sustainable management of agricultural areas and the scaling of biodiversity-friendly practices.
  • GBF Target 14 – Integrate Biodiversity in Decision-Making at Every Level: strengthening the integration of biodiversity into agricultural policies, planning and value chains.
  • GBF Target 19 – Mobilize 200 USD Billion per Year for Biodiversity From all Sources, Including 30 USD Billion Through International Finance: developing innovative financial solutions that help share the risks and costs of the transition towards more biodiversity-friendly production.

Shared Responsibility for Biodiversity

A key principle of BioFinCas is that the transition towards biodiversity-friendly agriculture cannot be achieved by producers alone.

  • Governments,
  • producer organizations,
  • financial institutions,
  • insurers,
  • buyers and
  • other actors along agricultural value chains

all have a role to play in creating the enabling conditions, incentives and financing needed to scale biodiversity-friendly practices.

Bringing Local Experience to the Global Agenda

Through its engagement with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), BioFinCas aims to bring practical experience and evidence from the three project countries, Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, to the global biodiversity agenda. At COP17, the project seeks to highlight how finance, agricultural practices and shared responsibility across value chains can help turn the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Framework into action on the ground.

As part of its voluntary commitment to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, BioFinCas contributes practical experience on biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient agriculture, innovative finance and shared responsibility across agricultural value chains. The initiative has been recognized by the CBD Secretariat as a case study illustrating contributions by actors beyond national governments to the implementation of the Framework.
